Shed Roof Felt Nails

Ensure the surface is flat clean and dry. Plenty of old rags and a bottle of white spirit for cleaning hands and tools is a must. If the circular nail heads penetrate the felt they can cause leakage. Small sheds usually require about 100 to 150 clout nails.

You can then re attach fascia boards to keep your shed looking smart by hiding the folded over roofing felt at each gable end. Most likely your garden shed roof is not immediately ready for installation especially if it is flat. Prepare the surface of the shed roof by removing any old roof felt or nails.

Space each nail apart by about 30 to 36 inches 76 to 91 cm along the side of the felt closest to the roof s peak and 12 inch 30 5 cm along the side closest to the ground. It does act to prevent leaks though as it seals around the nails. Plenty of lap cement on the overlaps should be enough and a felt nail every 4 around the eaves. Corrosion resistant to ensure they last over time and for use where strong joints are required.

Be careful to drive nails flush. All roofing felt is harder to work at low temperature. The trick is to fill the overlap so the wind or rain cannot get in to start too lift the felt without it squeezing out and making a mess. This allows it to relax after being rolled up.

The rolled roofing is the same material as asphalt shingles but in a long roll rather than cut into rectangles. Use your craft knife to cut a slit in the felt overhang at the apex of the roof then fold the felt down there and nail securely at 10cm intervals along the gable. Also strip any old felt that may already exist. Unroll your shed felt onto a clean and dry surface.

Remove any debris get rid of any nails or other structures poking through the top of the roof and make sure that the surface is completely dry and clean. The more common roof thickness is 3 4 inch decking. Nail length for shed roofing felt most commonly i tend to use 15mm galvanised clout nails these are long enough to pass through 4mm of high performance felt and not penetrate the 12 15mm shed roof timber underneath. When installing asphalt shingles on felt only to any grade decking you should use 1 inch long roofing nails.
